Underwater shipwreck
Around the 2nd century A.D., a small merchant ship from Cilicia or NW Syria was sailing along the east coast of Cyprus with about 5–6 tons of goods, mainly wine. It likely hit rocks near the shore and sank near Fig Tree Bay. Waves and currents scattered its cargo on the seabed. The shipwreck shows how local trade linked Cyprus with nearby coastal regions and was part of a wider network that sometimes included goods from farther places like Gaul.
