Underwater shipwreck
The Nissia shipwreck, dating to the Ottoman period, lies 28 meters below sea level off the coast of Famagusta. It is the only known shipwreck of its kind in Cyprus and one of the few being excavated in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Discovered by divers in the 1980s and officially reported in 1992, the site suffered deterioration and looting due to unregulated recreational diving.
Initial excavations began in 2014 by MARELab, including the recovery of a cannon that is now undergoing conservation in Larnaca.
